set back / heads-up / as we speak

이번 포스트는 set back / heads-up / as we speak 세 가지를 간단히 정리해보려고 한다.

 

이 세 가지의 공통점이라 하면, 글자 그대로는 예상하기 어려운 의미를 적어도 하나씩 가지고 있다는 것이다.

 

1. set back

 

set back을 간단하게 대표 의미만 배웠다면 (특히 고등학교 영단어 수준 정도) '저지하다, 방해하다' 정도로 익혔을 것이다. 그런데 단어나 어떤 표현에는 여러 의미가 있을 수 있듯, 다른 의미도 가지고 있다.

네이버 영영,영한사전에서 가져온 여러 의미들은 다음과 같다. 이 중 1,2번을 주목하면 될 것 같다.

① v. 저지하다, 방해하다 to hinder, impede

② v. (비용이) 들다 (informal) to cost (a person a specified amount)

③ n. setback anything that serves to hinder or impede

④ n. a recession in the upper part of a high building, esp one that increases the daylight at lower levels

⑤ n. a steplike shelf where a wall is reduced in thickness

 

(명사로 쓸 때에는 보통 set back보다는 setback으로 쓰일 것으로 보인다)

이 중 내가 글을 쓰게 된 계기는 2번의 의미에 있다. set somebody back something의 형태로 쓰면 '~에게 ~(의 비용)을 들이게 하다'라는 의미가 있는데, 예문을 살펴보면 다음과 같다.

ex) The repairs could set you back over £200. 그 수리에는 (비용이) 200파운드가 더 들 수도 있다.

 

따라서 최신 영문 기사에서 가져온 한 문장을 의역해 번역해본다면 다음과 같다.

 

In July, Tesla's "full self-driving" capability will set buyers back $8,000, up from $7,000 today.

오는 7월, 테슬라의 '완전자율주행' 기능에 대한 가격이 현재의 7천 달러에서 8천 달러로 오를 예정이다.

 

 

2. heads-up

 

네이버 사전에서 가져온 heads-up의 의미와 예문들이다.

heads-up 알림; 경고 (about something)

ex) 

Send everyone a heads-up about the changes well in advance.

그 변화에 대해서 모두에게 충분히 미리 알려주어라.

Can anyone give me a heads-up about how to change the format?

이 포맷을 어떻게 바꾸면 되는지 누가 내게 좀 알려주겠니?

This is a heads-up about the seminar this week.

이것은 이번 주 세미나에 대한 알림입니다.

His statement said that he was not given a heads-up about the FBI raid.

그의 진술서에는 그가 FBI 급습에 대해 경고를 듣지 못했다고 나와 있었다.

 

Cambridge Dictionary에서 제시한 heads-up의 의미들과 예문들에는 다음이 있다.

: a warning that something is going to happen, usually so that you can prepare for it.

ex) This note is just to give you a heads-up that Vicky will be arriving next week.

: a short talk or statement about how a situation or plan is developing

ex) The boss called a meeting to gives us a heads-up on the way the project was going.

 

최신 영문 기사에서도 다음과 같이 쓰이고 있다.

With this heads-up from Tesla, owners have a chance to buy the package before the price increase.

이번 공지로 테슬라 차주들은 가격 인상 전에 패키지를 구매할 수 있게 되었다.

 

반면, 대화에서 쓰이면 구어체로 조심해라! 라는 뜻도 있다.

Heads up! 조심해라!

 

 

참고로, 여기서 설명한 표현은 동사로 쓰이는 head up이 아니라 s가 붙은 heads-up, heads up이다. 참고로 Cambridge Dictionary, 네이버에서 참고한 head up의 의미로는 

: (부서 등을) 이끌다, 책임지다 to lead or manage a team, department, organization, etc.

ex) He was approached to head up Barclays' investment banking business.

: [금융] (가격이) 오르다 if share prices, currencies, etc. head up, they increase in value

ex) Big oil company suppliers are warning that prices are heading up further.

 

 

3. as we speak

 

as we speak: 바로 지금

 

as의 뜻이 다양하게 해석될 수 있지만, as we speak는 '바로 지금'이라는 뜻을 가지고 있으며, 네이버가 제시한 몇 가지 예문들에는 다음이 있다.

ex) Someone is taking an eye on us as we speak. 누군가가 바로 지금 우리를 눈여겨보고 있다.

ex) On the contrary, I think it would be a challenge to stay on top of all the different changes and developments that are happening even as we speak.

우리가 이야기하는 중에도 일어나고 있는 다양한 변화와 발전의 첨단에 서는 것은 도전적인 일이 될 거라고 생각합니다.

ex) It is orbiting the Earth even as we speak.

이것은 우리가 말하고 있는 지금도 지구 주변을 돌고 있다.
