영어에서 관용표현으로 쓰이는 표현 중 하나이다.
put (someone) on the spot : (곤란한 질문으로) ~를 곤혹스럽게 만들다
영영사전 정의로는,
put somebody on the spot
: put somebody in a difficult position, perhaps by asking them a difficult or embarrassing question

검색해보면 사실 드물게, 혹은 종종 put ~ in the spot으로 사용되는 예시도 볼 수 있다. 이러한 형태로 그대로 쓰이거나, 아니면 spot 앞에 형용사가 들어간 형태이다. 사전에는 put in the spot이 없지만 용례가 있으므로 이를 참고하여 글자 그대로 적당히 해석/번역하면 될 것 같다.
